Functionality
The drive’s two independent actuators operate in parallel to provide 1.7X better random performance than a single-actuator HDD and twice as much sequential throughput up to 582 MB/s. This is comparable to the throughput of a high-quality SATA SSD. Additionally, Western Digital asserts that the drive uses up to 37% less energy than two independent hard drives.
Specifications
The Western Digital Ultrastar DC HS760 20TB dual actuator hard drive uses the third generation OptiNAND platform, with nine 2.2TB ePMR energy-assisted perpendicular magnetic recording technology platters and NAND flash cache to store metadata and write cache data to improve performance and increase areal density. The Ultrastar DC HS760 drive appears as two 10TB drives when accessed through single-port SAS. The logical HDDs require software modifications on the host side because they are individually addressable. Therefore, not all data centres are able to employ the new drive.
Features
The DC HS760 20TB from Western Digital Ultrastar offers a five-year warranty and is designed to operate in 24/7 situations. Each LUN is built to support up to 500TB of workload annually, which is somewhat less than the 550TB workload that conventional data centre HDDs can sustain.
Price & Availability
The price of Western Digital’s twin actuator HDDs is unknown; however, they will be unavoidably more expensive than single actuator hard drives. Additionally, because these storage devices are made for data centres, their actual cost will rely on a variety of variables, including volume and existing or new long-term contracts.
