Realme 6 – impressive but not that much

Realme has started off the year on a positive note with fresh models which offer a substantial upgrade from their previous models in the budget segment. Realme 6 is a 5G enabled flagship smartphone and here’s all you need to know about it.

Design

The Realme 6 sports a 6.5-inch display with full HD+ resolution and IPS LCD technology. The corners of the device are well rounded, ensuring comfort when it is held. The realme 6 has the look and feel of a premium device. The front has the camera embedded into a punch-hole notch at the top left corner of the Gorilla glass 3 display. The rear displays a quad-camera setup along with multiple gradient streaks running down the back of the body, which merge at the charging port at the bottom of the screen. It gleams when it is hit by light, giving it a premium look. In a first, realme has opted for a side-mounted fingerprint sensor that also doubles up as a power button to provide fast and convenient unlocking. It has also finally moved to the USB Type- C standard, which was long overdue. This phone weighs 191g, which is reasonable. The back is made of polycarbonate, which tends to get scratched easily but a glass back is an unfair expectation to have from a phone in this price range.

Performance

The Realme 6 proudly flaunts a 90Hz refresh rate, whereas most phones in this range typically offer 60Hz. Topped with an 8GB RAM, the smartphone delivers a smooth interface. The inhouse Realme UI of the device is based on Android 10, which resembles stock android and helps keep the interface clean and simple. The Realme 6 is powered by a Helio G90T chipset and an octa core processor. The processor has two Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.05GHz and six cores clocked at 2.0GHz and a gaming-capable Mali-G76 MC4 GPU. The chipset is designed with a dual-layer graphite and copper foil for improved heat dissipation. However, we did notice the phone heat up a little after 20 min of gaming.

Display

The Realme 6 exhibits a 6.5 inch diagonal display, offering FHD+ (1080 x 2400px) resolution. Realme says the peak brightness of this panel is more than 400 nits. However, we found the display to be slightly reflective in bright sunlight. The display has a 405ppi density and a screen to body ration of 90.5% thanks to the hole punch front camera.

Camera

The Realme 6 is equipped with a quad-camera setup at the back consisting of a 64 MP primary camera, an 8 MP wide-angle camera with a 119-degree field of vision, a 2 MP mono sensor camera for depth, and a 2MP macro camera for close-up shots.

In daylight, Realme 6 automatically enables HDR and the camera captures quality shots. It is quick to focus as it has AI scene recognition and can identify what it is pointed towards. Close-ups taken from the camera are exceptional and it does a good job at separating the subject and the background. Portrait mode also allows one to select the level of blur before taking the picture. However, in low light, the camera quality slumps a little if one is not using the night mode; a fact which can be neglected considering the overall performance of the camera.

Moving on to the front camera, there is a 16MP unit. On switching to the front camera, a ring around the punch-hole lights up, adding a nice touch. Selfies shot with the Realme 6 have good detail.

Battery

The Realme 6 is powered by a booming 4300mAh Battery and boasts 30W fast charging capabilities which means it can charge fully in less than an hour. The Realme 6 can go over a day and a half of normal usage before it needs to be charged.

Verdict

Realme has delivered an admirable smartphone at a reasonable price with the Realme 6. It looks, feels and performs like a high-end phone. It offers a great battery life and the cameras are pretty decent too, for the price segment it operates in.
