Xiaomi’s latest mobile phone, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is a photography-oriented smartphone that comes in 4 colours – Gamma Green, Halo White, Pearl White, and Shadow Black and packs impressive design and software features. Xiaomi has designed it with powerful hardware that has seldom been seen in the price segment before.
Along with the move to incorporate a bigger screen offering a 6.53-inch display, the smartphone comes equipped with a 2GHz octa-core MediaTek Helio G90T processor alongside 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The backside offers you a sleek quad-camera set-up, but the slippery glass body screams for a back cover or phone case to ensure better grip.
The new smartphone comes with a big display measuring 6.53 inches protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. It is bigger than the 6.3-inch display that its predecessor, Redmi Note 7 Pro, comes with. The selfie camera sits in the centre of a waterdrop notch on the top alongside the camouflaged black earpiece that’s just above the display. The right side of the device houses both the power and the volume buttons, while the left side inhabits two trays. While one tray has a single nano-SIM slot, the second one has a dedicated microSD card slot along with a nano-SIM slot – the microSD slot has been added specially for the Indian market.
The backside of the device has been made with solid Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and sports curved sides to enable a better grip. The slightly raised camera set-up, along with the fingerprint scanner, is positioned centrally on the top half of the backside. While several smartphones have their fingerprint sensors at the back, this one seems to be a bit higher than usual, requiring a bit of a stretch. Right next to the camera module, you’ll find an LED flashlight with a separate camera under it.
By adopting a flexible chip-on-film display driver, Xiaomi has been able to visibly reduce the thickness of the bottom bezel on the Redmi Note 8 Pro. On the bottom edge, you’ll find a USB Type-C port, loudspeaker, and primary microphone. The IR emitter and secondary microphone can be found on the top edge of Redmi Note 8 Pro.
Specifications and Software
The big 6.53-inch display of Redmi Note 8 Pro delivers full-HD+ (1080×2340 pixels) resolution and HDR support offering vibrant and bright visuals. With a maximum screen brightness of 500 nits, the display is actually quite decent even when you’re outdoors – something which is still a struggle with many new smartphones.
Incorporating a MediaTek Helio G90T SoC especially designed for gaming, Redmi Note 8 Pro’s processor gives fierce competition to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G SoC which is speculated to be used in the upcoming devices being launched in the segment. An octa-core processor with two 2.05GHz performance-enhancing ARM Cortex-A76 cores and six 2.0GHz efficiency-boosting Cortex-A55 cores, the Helio G90T ensures that Redmi Note 8 Pro is not just a camera phone, but great for gaming and other processes as well. For graphics, Xiaomi has equipped the device with an ARM Mali-G76 MC4 integrated GPU clocked at 800MHz.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro comes with the usual array of latest connectivity options like Bluetooth 5, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, and dual 4G VoLTE while offering four different navigation systems.
Redmi Note 8 Pro has exactly twice the number of cameras compared to Redmi Note 7 Pro. With this massive leap, Xiaomi has revamped themselves for the camera-focused consumer base that forms a big chunk of mobile phone buyers today. The smartphone is equipped with a 64-megapixel primary sensor that comes with an f/1.79 aperture and 0.8-micron pixels, taking 16-megapixel shots in the default mode. The second sensor in the camera module is an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with an f/2.2 aperture and a 120-degree field of view. On top of this, Xiaomi has added a 2-megapixel macro camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor to enable clear and sharp photography in multiple settings. The front side of the Redmi Note 8 Pro sports a 20-megapixel selfie shooter.
Redmi Note 8 Pro comes with a massive 4500 mAh battery that ensures longer battery life and uninterrupted usage throughout the day. The smartphone comes with an 18W fast charger that makes charging this device up a quick affair, giving you the longevity you expect from your phone all day without taking up too much time in fuelling it.
Three variants of the Redmi Note 8 Pro have been launched by Xiaomi. The base variant offers 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage while the second variant sports 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The third variant of the Redmi Note 8 Pro sports a massive 8GB RAM along with 128GB of storage space on it. Storage for each variant is further expandable using a microSD card of up to 512GB.
