Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 review

The smartphones and their capabilities are improving with each succession. Every new generation of smartphones come with better cameras and displays, faster processors and more storage. The same is the case with Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip has always targeted those people who want to make a style statement with their phone, making it more of a lifestyle product. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 aims to do the same and is as expensive as its predecessor. However, Samsung claims it to be more durable and is IPX8 water-resistant making it more feasible for daily use. If you are looking to get your hands on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, you might want to read this review before going and buying it.

Design

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a fine balance between impressive style and incredible engineering. The flexible display and unique hinge of this smartphone will get a lot of attention everywhere you go. Almost everyone you meet will be surprised by the futuristic design of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The dimension and weight of the Flip 3 are almost the same as the first Flip model. The outer frame of the Flip 3 phone has a matte finish making it look aesthetically pleasing but also very slippery. The phone’s cover screen or external display measures 1.9 inches and has a higher resolution than the previous model.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is as slim as any flagship smartphone once you flip it open. With an aluminium finish and hinge resistance, the Flip 3 is an incredibly sturdy device. Samsung has gone all out and made the device water-resistant too, which was not the case with Galaxy Flip.

Display

The flexible display of the Flip 3 is the main attraction of the phone. It sports a 6.7-inch Full HD OLED panel and 2640 x 1080 pixels resolution. The screen supports a 120 Hz refresh rate with a brightness of 1,200 nits and also HDR 10+. When you flip and open the phone, the crease is noticeable in the middle but isn’t a distraction.

There is a secondary display in Flip 3, which is a pill-shaped 1.9-inch panel. The resolution of this small screen is 260 x 512 pixels. The panel creates a dual-tone look with a near mirror finish. Samsung has made this screen useful as you can check call notifications, messages and also control the music. You can also use the phone as a camera viewfinder to shoot photos and videos when the phone is folded. You also have the option of customizing this cover display according to your needs.

Camera

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 sports a dual-camera setup in the rear, one of which is a 12 MP standard camera, and the other is a 12 MP, 123-degree wide lens. Both these cameras are capable of producing good quality images with accurate colours and details in daylight. The primary camera also performs exceptionally well in low light conditions. The only thing is you will have to hold your phone still for a couple of seconds to make the most out of it. It is capable of producing photos with a high dynamic range and a decent amount of details. However, the wide camera struggles in low light and produces noisy images.

You can record 4k videos at up to 60 fps with plenty of details. It also comes with an inbuilt Optical Image Stabilization which helps in making the video relatively stable.

One advantage that this phone has when it comes to the camera is that when the phone is in a partially open position, the bottom part of the phone acts as a small tripod, stabilizing the phone. As a result, it is excellent to capture time-lapse videos and photos in low light conditions.

The selfie camera is a 10 MP punch hole camera which comes with a twist. You can frame selfie shots using your primary rear camera using the phone external display.

Battery

The Flip 3 is a very compact phone because of which it comes with a small 3,300 mAh battery. However, it can last up to 12 hours with a single charge. While this might not be a huge problem, some phones claim to last for 24 hrs with one single charge at a lesser price. Samsung could have tackled this problem by coming up with a fast charging option, but it decided to go for 15 W charging which is as slow as it gets.

Performance

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is not only about style but also performance. The company chose to go with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 chipset because it can handle any game that you throw at it. You can also stretch the setting to maximum on this without any problem. However, there is no effective thermal management in this phone because of which you might face heating problems if you play games like PubG and COD for an extended time.

This sleek phone is 5G compatible along with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS. The onboard stereo system is powerful enough for you to hear each sound distinctly. The fingerprint scanner, which is placed on the side of the phone, works quickly. It also has face unlock technology, but the camera sometimes takes a little time to recognize the face. The call quality in this phone is decent, and you can receive a call through the cover screen, which is quite extraordinary.

Conclusion

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 looks quite futuristic and unique, which will get a lot of attention. It is stylish and refined for everyday use. The exterior of the Flip 3 is quite robust, but the folding display needs to be handled with some care and love. The phone’s battery life isn’t that great if you are into watching a lot of content or playing games on your smartphone. However, if you are not bothered by these things, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 can be a new addition to your digital family.
