Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 Review

A Welcome Surprise

When Samsung launched its range of foldable smartphones, the Fold series seemed like the more legitimate contender for the title of best foldable device. But over time, the Flip series started gaining more traction, as people began to appreciate the slim and sleek look of the ultra-compact foldable flip smartphone, which took far less space than its bigger cousin, yet offering a similar level of utility, even if not in screen size. We take a look at the latest version of this formula, which was initially introduced by Motorola, but is now being polished by Samsung.

This latest iteration of the Flip 4 is all about refinement. It features a more refined design, which is slimmer but with a more robust hinge that is rated for far more open and closing cycles. Even the edges have been straightened to give more space on the inside. This makes the smartphone a bit more uniform in both look and feel, with the weight being distributed more proportionally. On the outside, you get a contrasting hazed back glass that edges up to a glossy metal frame. The setup is put together with precision, with a lot less space left open for outside impurities to get in. The whole thing looks neat and clean, with lots of colour options, including Bora Purple, Graphite, Pink Gold and Blue.

Updated Cover Screen

A highlight of the new experience is the updated cover screen, which offers lots of new SmartThings Scene widgets to help you control all sorts of activities. This makes the updated display a lot more useful on a regular basis. You can do all sorts of things, from making calls to replying to texts and even unlocking your car; without even opening up your phone.

The users can further customize the experience, with Galaxy Themes, available in various colours and shades, as well as custom fonts, icons and design packs. Plus, users can create their own cover screen with new clock designs and backgrounds in various formats such as images, GIFs and even video. This means that you can customize your smartphone on both a software and hardware level.

Even when you do open your phone, you can take advantage of a whole slew of custom split-screen functionalities, like the FlexCam, which lets you shoot hands-free video or capture full group selfies at various angles by partially folding the phone. FlexCam is optimized for most social media platforms, including Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook, so that you can utilize it in a unique user interface.

Similarly, for the selfie enthusiasts, the phone features a Quick Shot feature, which lets you take high-quality selfies right from the Cover Screen by leveraging the primary camera. You can also capture high-quality video in Quick Shot mode and seamlessly switch to Flex mode to continue recording in a truly hands-free experience. This also applies to taking selfies in Portrait Mode, which lets you preview the image taken in the actual photo ratio when using Quick Shot.

Display & Performance

On the inside, you get the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, paired with LPDDR5 RAM, and UFS 3.1 storage. This means you can enjoy all sorts of apps and games with no issues of performance throttling. The output is delivered to a second generation foldable 6.7" Super AMOLED dipslay that is rated for 120Hz refresh rate and 16M colour depth. This means that you will be able to enjoy all your content on a bright and vibrant screen that can fold down to half its size when needed.

All these state of the art components are powered by an expanded 3,700mAh battery. Samsung has been able to increase the size of the battery, thanks to more space on the inside, which was made possible by the straightened edges and a fuller profile. Thanks to support for Super-Fast Charging, you can now charge the device up to 50% in around 30 minutes, with a full day of usable battery life available in a full change.

As you can see, Samsung has put a lot of thought into making this device a usable and valuable proposition, which seems to justify its existence, even if it isn't able to justify its price just yet. Maybe with a few more iterations we will be able to get it in a price that makes it a worthy purchase even for budget conscious users.
