Design
The body of these Sennheiser headphones is pretty large and wide. The earcups easily cover your entire ears and have enough room to create a loud and clear soundstage. The earcups also feature an open-back design that allows some sound leakage to improve performance. The components are protected by a metal grill that features a traditional mesh-type design and is painted black to make everything blend in nicely.
You get a flexible and soft headband that is attached to the earcups, which features a soft-touch leather type material on the top and bottom, with enough cushioning to make it comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The headphones feature connective ports on both earcups, so you can easily connect a pair of high-quality 5.8ft swappable cables with 0.25-inch and 4.4mm stereo plugs. You can connect them to your preferred amp using its 1/8-inch adapter.
Sound Quality
The Sennheiser HD 600 series has been around since 1997 and has consistently offered a great sound output, with lots of oomph and clarity. This current model features the revised 300-ohm transducers that help lower the resonant frequency to 70Hz to give more punch to the sound. You have lots of control over the sound curve, which you can tune to get the best possible output.
While the open-back design is supposed to help produce a louder sound, it also allows a bit of noise interference as a result. Unfortunately, this also means that the HD 660S2 doesn’t feature any active noise cancellation, which makes it worse for listening to music in public spaces. Considering the fact that you already need an amp to get the best out of these models, certainly implies that they will only be used for indoor listening in quiet rooms.
Price & Availability
The Sennheiser HD 660S2 is a great premium offering for people who enjoy hi-res audio but will not be carrying them around during commutes. The company has officially started taking pre-orders, with a starting price of around $400. The price may vary depending on where you buy it from.
