India Mandates USB-C Charging For Smartphones

Will Require Mobiles To Have USB-C Charging Port

By March 2025, India will mandate that all mobile devices sold there include a USB Type-C standard charging port. Two common charger types are being standardised by the Bureau of Indian Standards, one for mobile devices and possibly another for wearable gadgets like smartwatches. The Ministry of Environment might examine how having a standard charger for gadgets will affect e-waste.

Necessity

The use of USB type C charging ports can be made necessary six months after the European Union publishes regulations for them in 2024, according to a large majority of the industry and government, because electronic manufacturers have a globally integrated supply chain. Due to the growth of Chinese smartphone companies, India has overtaken the US as the second-largest market for smartphones. In India, Android smartphones account for over 96% of all mobile device sales, with Apple coming in second with 3.1%.

Problem For Apple

All of Apple‘s iPhones and certain iPads have the company’s own Lightning charging port, which it is hesitant to abandon. To comply with EU regulations, the business acknowledged that it would produce iPhones with a USB-C port. According to reports, disposable chargers account for 11,000 tons of electronic waste annually. By eliminating the need to purchase additional charges, customers in the EU might save up to 250 million euros annually.

Market Share

In the second quarter of 2022, Apple had a 48% market share, accounting for the greatest portion of the US smartphone market. Following Samsung, which had 30% of the market share in the same quarter, comes Lenovo, which has 9% of the market. Most USB-C or MicroUSB chargers are used with Samsung and Lenovo smartphones.
