Design & Display
The Surface Pro 9 features much of the same design language and materials used in the previous surface devices. It still has the same slim profile, with a built-in collapsible stand that allows it to be attached to a detachable keyboard, thus enabling the 2-in-1 form factor. You do get some new colour options, which include Platinum, Sapphire, Forest, and Graphite.
It also features the same 13-inch display, with thick bezels on the top and bottom and an aspect ratio of 3:2. The display has a high refresh rate of up to 120Hz, along with a maximum resolution of 2,880 x 1,920 pixels. Even with the addition of the new processor and battery, the whole setup weighs barely 879 grams, which makes it a truly lightweight and portable computing device.
Performance & Connectivity
On the inside, the Surface Pro 9 features the latest 12th gen Intel Alder Lake-U processors, with the option to pick between a Core i5-1235U or the Core i7-1255U. Both processors have a base power draw of 15W but can easily be pushed up to 55W under heavy performance loads. They can be paired with up to 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 1TB of removable SSD storage. There is even a 5G model available for sale, but that is limited to the Snapdragon SQ3 processor models only.
In terms of control and connectivity, you get the proprietary Surface Connect port, along with the Windows Hello facial recognition system. This comes in addition to two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports. Sadly, there is no 3.5mm jack present on this device, which leaves most of the connectivity load to regular Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The whole setup is powered by a 47.7Wh battery, which the company claims can deliver up to 15 hours of battery backup.
Price & Availability
The Surface Pro 9 comes at a starting price of $999.99 for the base Core i5-1235U model, which comes with 8GB RAM, and 128GB of storage. You can upgrade the RAM to 16GB and the storage up to 256GB but that will cost you a hefty $1,399.99. The Core-i7-1255U model starts with a base price of $1,599.99 or the 16GB RAM and 256GB storage option, while the max 32GB RAM and 1TB storage unit comes at $2,599.99.
The Snapdragon-powered versions can also get paired with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage in the base model costing $1,299.99, while the high-end version is limited to 16GB RAM and 512GB storage, costing $1,899.99. Of course, none of these prices includes the cost of the Type Cover or the Slim Pen 2, both of which need to be purchased separately.
All models of the new Surface Pro 9 will start shipping on October 25, with the only exception being the UK market, which will have to wait until early November.
