Epic Games RealityScan App Launched

Turns Photos Into 3D Models

Epic Games is a name which is known to everyone for its high-quality games and game-related software. They have now introduced an app called RealityScan, which has the ability to change the way games are created. Anyone who uses this app can scan real-world things with their phone to create high-fidelity 3D models for free and enhance their gaming experience.

This new app is the result of Capturing Reality, a provider of photogrammetry software, being acquired by Epic recently. Similar to the company’s desktop programme, RealityScan joins 2D photos to create seamless 3D Models for virtual worlds like games. The purpose is to make it possible for game designers, gamers and other creators to scan actual objects at any time and location for their creations.

The process of using this begins with the user logging into their Epic Games account and capturing at least 20 images of an object from all angles as the first step in the scanning process. Real-time quality maps illustrate how effectively the user has covered the area as they move their phone; green indicates areas that have been adequately covered, yellow areas that might use more attention, and red areas that require the most additional shots. It also depicts the locations from which the photographs are taken as little polaroids.

As the user snaps the photos, the software automatically uploads and aligns them on the cloud. The user can also flip between the quality map and see the model through the camera view. If the user wants to trim it, 3D handles appear in front to help you drag the focus field, ensuring that it only captures the item and not the background or the floor beneath it. Simple objects photographed in uniform, indirect illumination perform best in the process. Wet or reflective surfaces are not the best choices to be photographed properly.

Once the user is satisfied with the capture, it can be exported to Sketchfab and utilised for 3D, VR, and AR applications. Alternatively, the user can also sell the 3D model if it has captured anything special.

Price and Availability

RealityScan is now available as a free download for iOS and iPadOS on the App Store. There is no information on whether the company will launch an Android app anytime soon, but it should be in the works.
