In the first few chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring, Gollum’s quest to find The Precious is told in an untold, first-person narrative in which you take on the role of Gollum. He is not a brawler, thus to survive, he must sneak and climb. Furthermore extremely important is the struggle taking place inside his depraved psyche. You have to decide whether to give in to Gollum’s darker tendencies or to cling to Smeagol’s tokens of goodwill. Although being an original story based on the books, you’ll encounter well-known characters and travel through a setting that was heavily influenced by Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films.
It would be an understatement to say that Gollum has taken a while to complete. Even at the time of its initial unveiling in 2019, it was not anticipated to go on sale until 2021. Even a planned September 2022 release that wasn’t going to materialise after a delay that was only meant to last a few months because Daedalic needed more time to polish the title didn’t happen that year.
The timing might be advantageous to the game. In 2019, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, the last major Tolkien game, was already out of date, while Amazon’s Lord of the Rings TV series was yet in its beginnings. Once we fast-forward to 2023, the situation changed. The Rings of Power on Amazon is a huge hit, and now game developer Weta Workshop is creating a game based on the series. Hobbits and orcs are once again in demand, and Gollum can profit from that trend.
